The people of Saint Jude's celebrate together every Sunday. Services are at 8:00 and at 10:30. Children are always welcomed. We also have separate activities for children starting at 10:25. The format of our worship service follows a tradition that dates back to the early church of almost two thousand years ago. It is about 60 minutes long, and divides into parts: the Liturgy of the Word -- during which the Bible is read and discussed, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist -- when we bless and share bread and wine.
We begin with a few short prayers and we sing a hymn together. This is followed by readings from the Bible. Typically, there are three such readings: one from the Old Testament, a portion of one the the letters of the New Testament, and then a passage from one of the Gospels. After the readings, there is a sermon of about fifteen to twenty minutes. During the sermon, one of our preachers explores some of the ideas from the readings and draws parallels to our life today.
After the sermon, the children join us from Sunday school, where they have completed their own Bible-based activities. We share peace and greetings with hugs and handshakes, and pray for those among us celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. The Liturgy of the Eucharist begins with a song performed by our choir. During this song, we collect donations which are used to support the church and its outreach activities. (You do not need to donate if you are just visiting. But you can if you want to.) The donations, the bread, and the wine are then brought to the altar as acknowledgement of our dependence on God. The bread and wine is blessed, and then shared by everyone who wishes to participate. The service ends with another prayer or two and a final hymn.
Many people then choose to stick around after the service to visit with friends. We usually have some snacks, and we always have plenty of coffee. We have an outdoor patio which is a great place to meet new people. Won't you stop by for a visit?
Our worship space is equipped with an inductive hearing loop, which can assist those with hearing aids to more fully participate in our celebration. We also provide reading glasses that you can borrow. The church is wheelchair accessible.
