Amazing Grace: The Story of a Song That Makes a Difference & the Man Who Wrote It This is the story of the enduring power of a single song across time-—and the ironic story of how that song was written by a man who traded in slaves. One of the most popular and enduring hymns in the English language, its lyrics were written by John Newton, a former slave ship captain. In the 19th century, the song successfully crossed the Atlantic, as Southern masters and slaves adopted the hymn as their own. Since then, `Amazing Grace` has been adapted by scores of performers for a plethora of styles, from country music to gospel to folk. The program features some of these performers as they express what the hymn means to them. |

Prayers Around the Hearth We will gather in the Fireside Room to have a special prayer time for discernment on the future mission and ministry of St. Jude`s. This is not a time of teaching, but a time of prayer. John Buenz takes a look at the theology of The Right Reverend John Shelby Spong, author of `Why Christianity Must Change or Die,` `Resurrection, Myth or Reality?` and `Rescuing The Bible from Fundamentalism.` Bishop Spong, Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, has taken a very unique, provocative position regarding religious faith. He challenges followers to question current biblical interpretations. Some have called him a revolutionary, rational anti-religionist.

Science & Religion: Conflicting World Views? Can one have a genuinely scientific habit of mind and live a religiously committed life as a committed Christian? Much of our culture tells us that there is an inherent conflict between these two states of mind and that we must make a choice. If you were to get all your information from the media, you might assume that scientists are all committed to explaining everything in terms of rules and natural laws and Christians are all fundamentalist who have no use for science. While few people at St. Jude’s fall at either extreme, our culture pushes for a division. Even if you don’t struggle with this conflict on a daily basis, you will find the discussion engaging your mind. |

Telling Our Stories Every Sunday we hear the words, `Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here.` These words are aimed at newcomer and oldtimer alike. If they are to be more than simply words, we must share our personal stories both by talking and by listening to others. While we learn from others, it is important to recognize that we also learn by talking about our own stories, but this is something that is hard for many Episcopalians.
During this hour, we will watch a short video from Trinity Wall Street, discuss what it means to St. Jude`s and our own personal journeys of faith to share our stories, and what St. Jude`s might be able to do to foster more story telling amongst the congregation and between different groups in the congregation. |

The Gospel According to Matthew Matthew`s Gospel is often considered the most `Jewish` of the four canonical gospels. It is as if Matthew was intent on proving that Jesus was the fulfillment of the tradition`s expectation of the `Messiah.` There are five distinct sections, or `books` which some say correspond to the five books of The Torah. But Matthew`s gospel does more than set out to prove to the Hebrew people that they have found their Messiah--Matthew`s gospel calls the reader to `radical discipleship`--to follow Jesus, the Messiah, no matter what the personal cost. It is this `call to radical discipleship in the Gospel of Matthew` which Pastor Mary Blessing will explore during this forum. |

La Roca Trip Update Come see and hear stories of La Roca Mission, Tijuana. Pastor Mary Blessing and two college students, Sara Morris and Jen Satterlee, introduce you to the story of La Roca, a non-denominational Christian ministry founded by Pastor Miguel Villanueva, PhD. This ministry began in 1988 as a mission serving orphaned children from the streets of Tijuana. Today it has blossomed into a ministry that cares for single mothers and their children. Pastor Miguel and his family live on site, where they work with the single mothers to train them in vocations that give them opportunities to work and care for their families. Missionaries from California and Minnesota were on hand serving these mothers and their children during the St. Jude`s missionary trip.
During morning chapel services the children begin with offering thanksgivings for all God has given them; thanksgivings for `mi mama` and `los Americanos` were heard over and over. |

Reclaiming the Great Commission Pastor Mary describes a biblically based model that can restore the missionary power of first-century Christianity to twenty-first century congregations. Developed and implemented by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, this model of shared vision and mission can guide members of any congregation into deeper and broader evangelism, an enhanced experience of community, and a renewed hope of personal and spiritual transformation. Transitions Many years ago, Fr. Buenz was given Bill Bridges book ‘Transitions.’ It sat on his bookshelf, until he retired, and realized that retirement required new thinking. Since then he has come to see many of life`s challenging experiences (graduation from high school, marriage, birth of first child, divorce, major career change or moves, death of parents and personal aging) as transitions, the passage of which is aided by understanding the dynamics evolved in any transition. Reading scripture reveals many of the familiar stories to have been transitions in which God uses that habit shattering experience to move the individual or group forward toward goals closer to the Kingdom. In addition to our usual life transitions, we are in the midst of a rare, and much larger, transition in our Western culture, Fr. Buenz uses Bridge’s book to help us understand this ‘larger scene.’ Using his own retirement, Bridge’s book, and scripture as sources, Fr. Buenz shares insights about the transitions that effect us all. |

While the vast majority of these will be women, about 1% will be men so they are are also at risk. The number of breast cancer cases relative to the population has been increasing in the last 20 years mainly due to increased use of mammography. The non-profit Foundation has focused on recording and distributing song as prayer to those less supported in this journey -- the unheard and disenfranchised voices of the world, those unable to walk out and be in nature, purchase music, or attend worship -- those incarcerated, institutionalized, or isolated. |

Stephen Ministry is a response in faith to Jesus’ commandment to love one another. It is the body of Christ in action - through one to one caring relationships, building up one another in love, so that all people who are in need of the love, care or support of a caring Christian friend are able to receive it. We all have times in our lives when circumstances may seem overwhelming, when we are in pain (physical or emotional), or when we just desire the company of an understanding friend.
Stephen, from whom this ministry takes its name, was the first of seven apostles chosen to minister and care for widows and orphans, while the other apostles preached and taught the gospel. You can read about his commission and service in Acts 6:1-7. |

3 Views of Jesus: The Historical Jesus How do we know about the historical Jesus? Should we care? These questions
were of great interest in the early years of Christianity. A renewal of
interest began in the 18th century,after the Age of Enlightenment, and has
continued ever since. One group which has recently renewed the investigation is the Jesus Seminar organized under the auspices of the Westar Institute. At its inception in 1985, thirty scholars took up the challenge. Eventually more than two hundred professionally trained specialists, called Fellows, joined the group. The Seminar meets twice a year to debate technical papers that have been prepared and circulated in advance. At the close of debate on each agenda item, Fellows of the Seminar vote, using colored beads to indicate the degree of authenticity of Jesus` words or deeds. Dropping colored beads into a box has become a trademark of the Seminar.

Emotional Intelligence This forum is based on the book, `Emotional Intelligence` by Daniel Goleman. Goleman defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness, altruism, personal motivation, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by friends, partners, and family members. Because emotional intelligence isn`t fixed at birth, Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can sow the seeds. Dr. Hinkle is a clinical psychologist with a practice in Santa Clara. He will cite examples from his own experience to supplement some of the conclusions drawn in the book. |

Sacred Drumming: Drums as a Temple Through many years of learning, teaching, and performing dance, rhythm, and drumming, Heidrun Hoffman found two important allies for her life; her body and her drums. They are full with endless gifts, tools for healing herself. Of these, she discovered that the qualities of listening are the most precious.
By breaking down rhythm into basic elements, rhythm has come to be both a vessel and a mirror for her inner knowledge. Connecting with rhythm by first speaking, then stepping or dancing a pulsation, and then trying to clap or sing something else, lets her play with her borders of doing many things simultaneously. Staying with one rhythm over a long time slows her down, creating a quiet and enjoyable possibility to dive into another place inside, where she just listens and sees what she is doing. This depth of listening flows into other areas of her life, places where she has to listen, or where she should listen better, or where she can see more, when she really listens. |
