The Meaning of Dreams: A Jungian Approach to Wholeness

Dr. Thomas Kirsch, C.J. Jung Institute

Some believe dreams to be mostly nonsense, while others blame indigestion, or worry. Dr. Thomas Kirsch discussses an approach to dream intrepretation based on the theories of Carl Jung. Dreams and dream interpretation identify our out of balance parts. Dreams bring wholeness and healing that might also change our direction or give us new insight into a situation.

Dr. Kirsch expands on the belief that dreams can be understood in a dualistic framework that includes ideas expanded from Jungian theories of the unconscious process and spirituality.

Dr. Kirsch is a graduate of Yale Medical School and completed Psychiatric residency at Stanford Medical Center. He is a graduate of the C. J. Jung Institute in San Francisco, and is a past President of both the Jung Institute and the International Association of Analytical Psychology.

Dr. Kirsch is also author of The Jungians: A Comparative and Historical Perspective, providing a historical overview of the development and spread of the Jungian movement from its beginnings early in the 20th-century.

Communication and the Creation of Better Social Worlds

Professor Barnett Pearce, Fielding Graduate University & Kim Pearce, Speech Communications, De Anza College

Since the Enlightenment, communication has been viewed as an odorless, colorless, tasteless vehicle for exchanging ideas and information. Only recently has a new paradigm of communication emerged; this new perspective views our social worlds as made in patterns of communication. Barnett and Kim Pearce will discuss this new paradigm of communication and describe its implications in creating better social worlds.

It’s useful to differentiate different types of communication: debate, discussion, argument, deliberation, dialogue.

In the postmodern, globalized world in which we live, dialogue is a form of communication that our culture must develop and nurture.

Professor Barnett Pearce is a founding member of the Public Dialogue Consortium and Pearce Associates. He has written 9 books, the most recent being, Making Social Worlds: A Communication Perspective (2007). Kim Pearce teaches Speech Communication at De Anza College and is a founding member of the Public Dialogue Consortium, Pearce Associates and has worked with organizations and communities in several countries on three continents.

Gravity and Aging

Dr. Joan Vernikos

Did you know that astronauts returning from a mission in the near gravity of space show startling changes normally linked to being old? After only weeks in space, their coordination and balance are disturbed; muscles and bones weaken; like diabetics, they become resistant to insulin; they do not absorb nutrients as well; have less stamina; and have problems getting a good night’s Dr. Vernikos challenges the widely held belief that most changes associated with aging are unavoidable. She discusses how gravity is not the enemy that drags us down. Increased gravity awareness and making gravity our friend can lead to renewed health and vigor.

Joan Vernikos, a pioneer space researcher and Head of NASA’s Life Sciences from 1993-2000, is on a terrestrial mission to create awareness that gravity holds the secret to the “cure” for what ails modern society. She lectures regularly on ageing and leadership issues, is widely published in the academic and aviation/space media and has been interviewed on FOX News and NPR’s Marketplace.

Dr. Vernikos wrote her first book for the general public, “The G-Connection: Harness Gravity and Reverse Aging” with a foreword by John Glenn, to spell out how evidence from space research pointed to gravity as a positive force for health and well-being.

Jesus, Homosexuality and the Bible

Pastor Karen Siegfriedt

A recent study found that 38 percent of Americans polled were certain the Old Testament was written a few years after Jesus` death. Ten percent believed Joan of Arc was Noah`s wife. Many even thought the epistles were the wives of the apostles. This same kind of biblical ignorance is present around the topic of homosexuality. Often people who love and trust God`s Word have never given careful and prayerful attention to what the Bible does or doesn`t say about homosexuality.

Most people who are certain they know what the Bible says about homosexuality don`t know where the verses that reference same-sex behavior can be found. They haven`t read them, let alone studied them carefully. Yet the assumption that the Bible condemns homosexuality is passed down from generation to generation with very little personal study or research. The consequences of this misinformation are disastrous for the entire church.

God`s Unfinished Future - Why it Matters Now

Jürgen Moltmann , Emeritus professor of theology at Tübingen University in Tübingen, Germany
[Video & Discussion]

In America today there is a battle over Christianity’s vision of God’s future. Popular apocalyptic works such as the Left Behind series pit the forces of good and evil in an imminent showdown where God will defeat the forces of evil, the earth will be annihilated, and the saved lifted up. Professor Moltmann believes this vision is a massive and dangerous distortion of the biblical picture of God’s purpose. This apocalypticism, in our tradition and others, supports a politics of polarization, violence, and extremism.

In a lifetime of teaching and writing, Jürgen Moltmann (Theology of Hope, The Coming of God) has championed an alternative to contemporary renderings of apocalypticism. His perspective is rich in its biblical grounding as well as socio-historical analysis, underscoring the political implications of all theological visions about ultimate things. Now at the pinnacle of a significant career, he offers a powerful story in which God is truly all in all and no life, no aspect of God’s good creation is abandoned.

A 17 minute video of Professor Jürgen Moltman, widely considered to be one of the most important theologians of the last fifty years, provides a nice lead-in to our own discussion.

Evolution and Intelligent Design: An Unnecessary Confrontation

David Morrison, Senior Scientist, NASA Astrobiology Institute

Almost every scientist understands that everything evolves -- stars, planets, life -- and that the concept of natural selection, first proposed by Charles Darwin, provides a powerful and elegant way to understand the process of biological evolution. Indeed, it has aptly been said that without evolution and natural selection, nothing would make sense in the biological sciences. This should all have been settled early in the 20th century, and it was for the scientific community. Yet the concept of evolution, and even the reality of `deep time` that allows us to date the formation of the Earth (4.6 billion years) and the beginning of the big bang (14 billion years) are being constantly challenged by Christian and Islamic fundamentalists. This noisy confrontation degrades American education and distracts all of us from much more important issues. David Morrison, Senior Scientist at the Astrobiology Institute at NASA-Ames, discusses some of the ways the the meaning of evolution has been distorted to create the appearance of a scientific debate where there is none.

Caring for the Mental Health of Those in Jail

Carolyn Bowker & Evelyn Vigil, Chaplain, Main Jail

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow captives. (Hebrews 13:3)

Building and maintaining prisons is one of the fastest growing `industries` in the United States. More and more men, women, and children are being incarcerated each day, forcing communities to build additional jail cells. Beyond the issues of how to prevent people from entering the prison system is how to care for those already behind bars. Santa Clara County is one of the few counties with ministry programs in the jails for the mentally ill.

Our own Carolyn Bowker is joined by Evelyn Vigil, Main Jail Chaplain, and Christine Ferry, Head of Adult Custody Mental Health, for a discussion of jail ministries and pastoring to those with mental illness.

In our society, vocational discernment is no longer just for students or young adults. If you are a kid, know a kid, or are a kid at heart, you`ll leave with some things to think about.

Elizabeth Thompson works at Santa Clara University under a grant funded program to assist students with exploring how their life experiences inform their vocation and ways to make a meaningful contribution through their work. Through the Career Center, she teaches courses titled Let Your Life Speak. She also lives with the students and serves as a Resident Minister in the residence halls.

Ms. Thompson is a graduate of Santa Clara University, and completed her M.Ed in College Administration from Oregon State University.

All About Addictions

Steve Baron, Adjunct Faculty, Santa Clara University

Alcohol, drugs, gambling, the Internet--why is it that some people get into trouble and seem to lose control, and others don`t? Is it simply an issue of choice, a medical issue, or both? How does addiction affect the addict and the people they love, and what can each of them do about it. Steve Baron, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, is the former Director of Family Court Services in Santa Clara County and currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Santa Clara University. He will discuss these issues and address your questions on this subject.

Grassroots World Peace

Curt Beckmann, Neophyte Humanitarian

Curt Beckmann will share his personal (and rapid) journey from `frustrated observer` to `inspired participant` in working toward world peace at an individual level, a condition he warns is infectious. Do you have these thoughts?:

  • Are things improving or getting worse?
  • Who is actually responsible for fixing this anyway?
  • Shouldn’t this be the UN’s job? What are they doing?
  • Can individuals and volunteers make any difference, really?
  • I would get involved, but it’s football (hockey, baseball, oops football again) season, plus I’ve got a hangnail.
  • How does this tie in with Pastor Karen’s sermon about getting intimate with God?
If you cannot wait, you can prepare by reading Curt’s blog at: http://wannaresolution.blogspot.com.

Ask the Rector V

Pastor Karen Siegfriedt

Come and ask Pastor Karen whatever you would like about theology and the Episcopal Church. This is a great opportunity for everyone, but especially kids. Each year, our youth, in particular, ask some very interesting questions. The ``Ask the Rector`` series started as a way to fill a Sunday morning, but quickly turned into an annual event that usually generates conversations lasting for several weeks.
