Amazing Grace: The Story of a Song That Makes a Difference & the Man Who Wrote It

This is the story of the enduring power of a single song across time-—and the ironic story of how that song was written by a man who traded in slaves. One of the most popular and enduring hymns in the English language, its lyrics were written by John Newton, a former slave ship captain. In the 19th century, the song successfully crossed the Atlantic, as Southern masters and slaves adopted the hymn as their own. Since then, `Amazing Grace` has been adapted by scores of performers for a plethora of styles, from country music to gospel to folk. The program features some of these performers as they express what the hymn means to them.

Spong Says The Church Must Change?

The Rev. John Buenz takes a look at the theology of The Right Reverend John Shelby Spong, author of `Why Christianity Must Change or Die,` `Resurrection, Myth or Reality?` and `Rescuing The Bible from Fundamentalism.` Bishop Spong, Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, has taken a very unique, provocative position regarding religious faith. He challenges followers to question current biblical interpretations. Some have called him a revolutionary, rational anti-religionist.

Program on Islam

Following the September 16th Adult Forum dealing with our American Tragedy, questions were being asked which required more information and explanation of the Muslim Religion. -What are the five Pillars of Faith? -In light of recent events, what would the Koran say to that? -How would it deal with terrorism in general? -What passages are the terrorists using to validate their actions, and how would the religious Muslim interpret those same passages? These and other issues and concerns will be addressed by Iman Tahir Anwar. Come and hear this informative and timely topic.

Grassroots World Peace

Curt Beckmann will share his personal (and rapid) journey from `frustrated observer` to `inspired participant` in working toward world peace at an individual level, a condition he warns is infectious. Do you have these thoughts?:

  • Are things improving or getting worse?
  • Who is actually responsible for fixing this anyway?
  • Shouldn’t this be the UN’s job? What are they doing?
  • Can individuals and volunteers make any difference, really?
  • I would get involved, but it’s football (hockey, baseball, oops football again) season, plus I’ve got a hangnail.
  • How does this tie in with Pastor Karen’s sermon about getting intimate with God?

Sunday morning remains the most racially segregated time of the week. But it wasn`t always that way. The emergence of segregated churches was neither immediate nor inevitable. Based on research from his book Religion and the Rise of Jim Crow in New Orleans, Author and Professor of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University, Dr. James Bennett discusses the long, tortuous and often contested emergence of racial segregation in American religious institutions. Evangelicals in Modern America

Evangelical churches have experienced dramatic growth during the past 20 years. What is driving this growth, and what are the implications for American society and the historically dominant mainline churches? Are there political implications in the coming election? Locally, what cultural elements feed the growth of Asian evangelical churches in Silicon Valley?

Prof. Bennett has a B.A. from UCLA, M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in American Religious History from Yale University. Science & Religion: Conflicting World Views?

Can one have a genuinely scientific habit of mind and live a religiously committed life as a committed Christian? Much of our culture tells us that there is an inherent conflict between these two states of mind and that we must make a choice. If you were to get all your information from the media, you might assume that scientists are all committed to explaining everything in terms of rules and natural laws and Christians are all fundamentalist who have no use for science. While few people at St. Jude’s fall at either extreme, our culture pushes for a division. Even if you don’t struggle with this conflict on a daily basis, you will find the discussion engaging your mind.

Telling Our Stories

Every Sunday we hear the words, `Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here.` These words are aimed at newcomer and oldtimer alike. If they are to be more than simply words, we must share our personal stories both by talking and by listening to others. While we learn from others, it is important to recognize that we also learn by talking about our own stories, but this is something that is hard for many Episcopalians.   During this hour, we will watch a short video from Trinity Wall Street, discuss what it means to St. Jude`s and our own personal journeys of faith to share our stories, and what St. Jude`s might be able to do to foster more story telling amongst the congregation and between different groups in the congregation.

The Gospel According to Matthew

Matthew`s Gospel is often considered the most `Jewish` of the four canonical gospels. It is as if Matthew was intent on proving that Jesus was the fulfillment of the tradition`s expectation of the `Messiah.` There are five distinct sections, or `books` which some say correspond to the five books of The Torah. But Matthew`s gospel does more than set out to prove to the Hebrew people that they have found their Messiah--Matthew`s gospel calls the reader to `radical discipleship`--to follow Jesus, the Messiah, no matter what the personal cost. It is this `call to radical discipleship in the Gospel of Matthew` which Pastor Mary Blessing will explore during this forum.

What Is Your Language of Love?

In Dr. Gary Chapman`s book The Five Love Languages, he talks about how different people express love in different ways: quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Some people are verbal, expressing their love in words. Others may never speak their affection, yet they show it by the things they do.

Sadly, many couples look to receive love the same way they give it, misunderstanding their partners. This can lead to quarrels, hurt feelings, and even separation. However, if you understand each other`s love languages, you can learn to give and receive love more effectively.

Gary Chapman`s books are available in the St. Jude`s Library. Also, check out www.fivelovelanguages.com.

La Roca Trip Update

Come see and hear stories of La Roca Mission, Tijuana. Pastor Mary Blessing and two college students, Sara Morris and Jen Satterlee, introduce you to the story of La Roca, a non-denominational Christian ministry founded by Pastor Miguel Villanueva, PhD. This ministry began in 1988 as a mission serving orphaned children from the streets of Tijuana. Today it has blossomed into a ministry that cares for single mothers and their children. Pastor Miguel and his family live on site, where they work with the single mothers to train them in vocations that give them opportunities to work and care for their families. Missionaries from California and Minnesota were on hand serving these mothers and their children during the St. Jude`s missionary trip. During morning chapel services the children begin with offering thanksgivings for all God has given them; thanksgivings for `mi mama` and `los Americanos` were heard over and over.

The mission built a school to educate children (for free) who do not have access to Mexico`s schools. Children from the neighborhood as well as children from the mission are welcome to attend this school. La Roca mission also offers a medical clinic for all neighbors as well as the mission families. There is a library, a computer lab, counselling, and other important services to assist in the mission`s purpose `to create a series of activities and services to resotre family values and improve the spiritual and economic situation of the community without consideration of age, gender or religion.`

Reclaiming the Great Commission

Pastor Mary describes a biblically based model that can restore the missionary power of first-century Christianity to twenty-first century congregations. Developed and implemented by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, this model of shared vision and mission can guide members of any congregation into deeper and broader evangelism, an enhanced experience of community, and a renewed hope of personal and spiritual transformation. In the first five years, the Diocese of Texas saw significant increases in attendance, baptisms, and stewardship, and it has led to greater lay participation, stronger support for outreach programs, and an increased awareness of the miraculous. It has made the Church more relevant to the unchurched and more meaningful to its members. It has changed the lives of the faithful, fortifying their commitment to discipleship, deepening their faith, and strengthening their experience of the Gospel even as it has brought in new disciples and touched the spiritually hungry.

Will Our Children have Faith?

Book written by John H Westerhoff III reviewed by Mary BlessingOriginally written in 1976, this classic critique of Christian education is back in a revised edition. Christian education, according to Westerhoff, has modeled itself on the schooling-instructional paradigm of our secular schools. Instead of expecting faith formation to happen within a variety of contexts-the family, the church family, the school, and the church school-religious education has been relegated entirely to Sunday morning classes. There, children learn the facts about religion, but will they learn or experience faith? How can we be communities that nourish and nurture the faith of children, instead of only teaching them facts?

Caring for the Mental Health of Those in Jail

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow captives. (Hebrews 13:3)

Building and maintaining prisons is one of the fastest growing `industries` in the United States. More and more men, women, and children are being incarcerated each day, forcing communities to build additional jail cells. Beyond the issues of how to prevent people from entering the prison system is how to care for those already behind bars. Santa Clara County is one of the few counties with ministry programs in the jails for the mentally ill.

Our own Carolyn Bowker is joined by Evelyn Vigil, Main Jail Chaplain, and Christine Ferry, Head of Adult Custody Mental Health, for a discussion of jail ministries and pastoring to those with mental illness.

Transitions

Many years ago, Fr. Buenz was given Bill Bridges book ‘Transitions.’ It sat on his bookshelf, until he retired, and realized that retirement required new thinking. Since then he has come to see many of life`s challenging experiences (graduation from high school, marriage, birth of first child, divorce, major career change or moves, death of parents and personal aging) as transitions, the passage of which is aided by understanding the dynamics evolved in any transition. Reading scripture reveals many of the familiar stories to have been transitions in which God uses that habit shattering experience to move the individual or group forward toward goals closer to the Kingdom. In addition to our usual life transitions, we are in the midst of a rare, and much larger, transition in our Western culture, Fr. Buenz uses Bridge’s book to help us understand this ‘larger scene.’ Using his own retirement, Bridge’s book, and scripture as sources, Fr. Buenz shares insights about the transitions that effect us all.

Introduction to the Enneagram

Ever want to know what makes you think, feel, and act the way you do? How your way of perceiving things, your reality, might differ from that of another person`s? Do you ever wonder why you behave the way you do, even when you know that it would be better to change?
The Enneagram, a powerful and dynamic personality system that describes nine distinct and fundamentally different patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting, provides the answers to these questions and much, much more. It tells us what motivates us, what basic coping strategies we adopt to survive and thrive, and what causes our relationships to flourish or flounder. In addition, the Enneagram provides a specific path of personal development and enrichment for each of the nine types -- ways to discover our highest qualities and purpose in life.
David Daniels, M.D. is a leading developer of the Enneagram. Since 1988, Dr. Daniels has trained hundreds of professionals in the use of the Enneagram.

Finding God in All Things: an Ignatian Environmental Ethic

Environmental degradation, unsustainable industrial and farming practices, and vanishing biodiversity are the signs of our times, yet these are met mostly with political lethargy and spiritual sloth. There is an underlying illness of the soul in the West, a wrong view of nature that is also being adopted by the East and the South as they seek to imitate our `success` by copying our faults. In Biblical terms, what is our God-given `dominion` over all the other creatures - ownership or stewardship?

For Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, the answer to the above-stated question was clear. God made the heavens and the earth, and God remains the active and engaged Lord of all creatures and all creation. Human beings are created to praise, reverence and serve God, and integral to this ultimate purpose is a wise relationship with all other creatures, treating them as gifts and graces that are to be engaged with discernment, always with a view to our ultimate end: a redeemed and renewed creation come fully into the presence of God.

Author and professor Fr. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. leads a conversation exploring the human relationship with non-human creation in the light of our proper relationship with God.

Theological Education for All

Anglican theologian John Macquarrie noted, `Christian action itself will become aimless and sporadic unless it is illuminated by clear theological understanding…Theology is indispensable to the Church, and where theology fails, we must take this as a demand for better theology and certainly not as an excuse for turning away from it or for imagining that the Church can get along without it.`

In Europe 500 years ago the idea that `ordinary` Christians might read scripture directly and thereby come to a greater understanding of God in Jesus Christ was radical and dangerous indeed. It was, however, an irresistible idea and one whose time had come — or at least, had come again. Jesus revealed all that he had from his Father to his disciples, the majority of whom were ordinary people. And, ordinary people of faith living their daily lives have questions. What is good and what is evil? How can I use my abilities and money in God`s service? Do I want Christian formation for my children? Is my company`s sales policy moral? Does this government policy assist my neighbors to live with dignity

SOS: Stressed Out Students

Dr. Mollie Galloway was originally scheduled to present at St. Jude`s in January, but was unable to join us on that day. We had a great forum led by Barbara Simmons that introduced us to the topic of stressed out students. As a result, Dr. Galloway will go into greater depth on the issues and potential solutions to student stress.

Recent scholarship has found that adolescents are often compromising their mental and physical health, personal values, and commitment to learning as they try to cope with growing pressure to achieve in schools. In a survey released last year, local parents cited school-related stress among their top concerns for their children.

Dr. Mollie Galloway from the Stanford University School of Education (SUSE) discusses the work begun at SUSE by Denise Clark Pope, author of Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students (2001), developed the SOS program. According to Pope, while much research on school achievement, motivation, and stress has been conducted, few studies examine the students’ perspectives on these issues, and even fewer address the school communities’ experiences as they attempt to enact change on issues of academic stress. SUSE researchers are particularly interested in these issues, especially school reform efforts, where students work closely with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to foster change. The researchers also hope to create some specific tools that schools can use to address the problem of academic stress and increase student engagement in school.

SOS: Stressed Out Students

`In the past ten years we have seen an alarming increase in academic stress in students of all ages. The SOS-Stressed Out Students project examines the sources of this stress and works with students, parents, teachers and school communities to devise site-specific strategies to foster student health, integrity, and school engagement.`

Loving Life Support Decisions

Stephen Ministry

As St. Jude`s prepares to commission its Stephen Ministers, come learn about this valuable ministry. Stephen Ministry is a response in faith to Jesus’ commandment to love one another. It is the body of Christ in action - through one to one caring relationships, building up one another in love, so that all people who are in need of the love, care or support of a caring Christian friend are able to receive it. We all have times in our lives when circumstances may seem overwhelming, when we are in pain (physical or emotional), or when we just desire the company of an understanding friend. Stephen, from whom this ministry takes its name, was the first of seven apostles chosen to minister and care for widows and orphans, while the other apostles preached and taught the gospel. You can read about his commission and service in Acts 6:1-7.

Spiritual Well-Being Among Older Adults: What Does Our Anglican Tradition Say About Aging?

Through the use of scripture, tradition, reason and experience, we will explore the meaning of aging as a religious and spiritual issue. We will question our attitudes toward aging. The spirituality of aging is not a problem to be solved by technology or through political means. It is an issue of understanding our own mortality, and what the process of living and growing old means to us individually and collectively, throughout our history as a people of God.

More on Family Systems Theory

Mary Jo Garrett, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, helps us to a deeper level of understanding of the Family Systems Theory introduced by Pastor Karen a few months ago. This approach is rapidly becoming one of the most popular and effective methods of problem solving. Unlike conventional psychological theory which focuses on the individual, Family Systems Theory encourages people to think of issues (e.g. conflict, difficult relationships, loneliness, etc.) in terms of a multigenerational family or a `system.` This approach is extremely useful for helping people to move away from blaming others and towards individual responsibility.

3 Views of Jesus: The Historical Jesus

How do we know about the historical Jesus? Should we care? These questions were of great interest in the early years of Christianity. A renewal of interest began in the 18th century, after the Age of Enlightenment, and has continued ever since. One group which has recently renewed the investigation is the Jesus Seminar organized under the auspices of the Westar Institute. At its inception in 1985, thirty scholars took up the challenge. Eventually more than two hundred professionally trained specialists, called Fellows, joined the group. The Seminar meets twice a year to debate technical papers that have been prepared and circulated in advance. At the close of debate on each agenda item, Fellows of the Seminar vote, using colored beads to indicate the degree of authenticity of Jesus` words or deeds. Dropping colored beads into a box has become a trademark of the Seminar.
